It installed on my PC without any drama or malware. That said, a year or so ago a site called Softronic still hosted the Polaroid Dust and Scratch Removal Tool. So read every box, every line, before installing.

It will ask permission to install the browser redirector, search engine hijacker, toolbar, etc. The crapware installation is usually on or "yes" by default. Back up everything important, and it's probably a good idea to have a complete backup HD with OS installed and ready to go in case there's a serious infestation including ransomware, in which case I'd just discard the infected drive.Īnd watch every step of the installation.
Also set a restore point, although this is of limited use if there's a serious malware or ransomware infestation. I always use two or three different file scanners before downloading anything.

You can scan the zip or exe files before downloading - there are many malware scanners available. So be cautious with every free download site. It's not in the interest of anyone other than the rare prankster or troll to completely disable your PC, but it's very common to sneak in crapware that may try to turn your PC into a zombie or part of a botnet. It's rarely malware - viruses - but usually browser hijackers/redirectors, toolbars and spyware/adware.

It's a bit tricky to set up the parameters but is much more efficient that single spotting tools and more accurate than the batch dust removal tools in my older copies of Jasc PSP and Corel.Ĭaution regarding all download sites: Many free download sites bundle crapware with their installers.
